What is a Marriage Encounter Weekend?

A Marriage Encounter Weekend is a residential workshop for married couples. It is a unique opportunity to enjoy quality time away from the distractions of work, children and other everyday interruptions and to enrich your marriage relationship.

The aim of the Weekend is to create a warm relaxed atmosphere in which husband and wife can explore and share their feelings, hopes, joys, fears, needs and differences, while at the same time learning how to improve their communication and listening skills and to deepen their relationship.

We often take time out to go on courses that enhance our capabilities at work or to better enjoy our leisure time. So why not a refresher course that helps to do that for your marriage and enhances your enjoyment of being together? Every marriage deserves this kind of attention.

Weekends are held at a suitable venue with comfortable accommodation. They begin at 8pm on Friday and end around 5pm on Sunday.

Who is it for?

A Marriage Encounter Weekend is for couples with good marriages who are open to the possibility of something more.

The Weekends have a Catholic ethos, but couples of any faith can enjoy and benefit from the Weekend and are most welcome.

Please note that a Marriage Encounter Weekend is not a substitute for couples who may need counseling.

What happens on the weekend?

The Weekend consists of a series of presentations on different aspects of relationship in married life given by a team of three married couples and a priest.

The aim is to provide a positive and thought provoking experience which will help your relationship to grow, by helping you and your spouse to both communicate with and listen more effectively to each other.

How many years should we be married to make a Weekend?

The Weekend works for couples at any stage of married life. This is possible because the structure encourages each couple to begin their Weekend experience at wherever they are in their relationship and work from there.

Is a couple’s privacy respected?

Yes, the Weekend is an individual experience for each couple. While couples socialise at breaks, all discussion of a personal or intimate nature is totally private to each couple.

What does the weekend cost?

There is a booking deposit of €50 per person (or its Sterling equivalent).

The actual cost (of which participants will be advised on the Weekend) depends on the venue used but averages at approx. €200 per person (or its Sterling equivalent).

It is the policy of Marriage Encounter that no couple should ever have to forgo making a Marriage Encounter Weekend because they cannot afford it.

When and where are Weekends held?

Weekends are usually held in either a hotel or a retreat house. Today many retreat houses offer comfortable rooms in attractive surroundings at reasonable cost. The Weekend is however in no sense a ‘retreat’.

 What do participants take home?

What participants learn through experience on the Weekend is a new technique of communication that can help them build and enjoy a deeper richer relationship and which they can continue to use at home. They also receive hand outs and are encouraged to take notes for use later on.
